This month I had the amazing opportunity to serve as a faculty advisor with Ivan Muslin for a group of six Marshall University students participating in the Intuit Innovation for Impact 2017 Design for Delight Challenge at Marshall University. We spent nearly a month being taught by Intuit’s best and then putting those principles into practice to find an innovative way to address the issue of education in rural West Virginia.

Our Grand Challenge was: “How might we empower communities to ensure their children reach their highest potential despite the challenges they face in rural West Virginia?”

Our group name embodies our commitment to helping West Virginia’s disadvantaged and disenfranchised youth to become more engaged in their own education and learning. As our team met and listened to staff from the A.D. Lewis Community Center in Huntington, WV, we could feel their deep and heartfelt concerns that they lacked the resources to help the youth at their center see the value of education and love learning. We chose to focus on helping these youth see the correlations between education and future opportunity, or in other words to show them that there is a “light at the end of the tunnel,” and began formulating initial plans for a peer tutoring program. When we first visited the center, however, we automatically knew our idea would be unfeasible because the youth at the center actually needed more structured activities that could get them excited about learning. We immediately started working on a plan to create and offer after-school clubs with different educational themes. Our first innovative iterations involved gauging youth interest in the different club themes. Then we presented sample activities for for the youth at the center to gauge their engagement and interest in the actual activities. From the beginning of our process we have been innovating with empathy. Along the way we’ve had some fabulous failures with completely unexpected outcomes that provided us with amazing insights about the center’s staff and youth. We’ve also learned a lot about ourselves, especially as we’ve seen our impressions and ideas continually evolve based on our broadening perceptions of the actual needs of the individuals we’ve set out to serve. — Group description in the program written by Ivan and me.

The students in my team (E.Y.E. Engaging Youth in Education) did a phenomenal job. They learned so much about empathy and learning from opportunities to fail. Two things Brad Smith said last night really embody what my students learned “Learn to love the problem, not the solution,” and “fail fast so you can succeed faster.” I’m so glad I got to spend the evening with my beautiful wife and best friend Leah. We got to mingle with President Gilbert, Brad Smith, Jennifer Garner, and Chad Pennington. This experience was a WHOLE LOT more work than I think any of us anticipated, but it was a great opportunity. Thanks to #Intuit and Marshall University for the opportunity. Thanks to Ben Eng and Isabelle Rogner for all the hours of work they put into making this event happen. Thanks to Ivan Muslin (my co-coach for E.Y.E.) for all the insight and work with our team. And, most importantly, thanks to the students in the team (Mya, Samantha, Amanda, Sara, Viky, and Megan) who worked their tails off the last few weeks and put in a lot of time and effort into this. I earned my Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology from Michigan State University, and I’m currently an Assistant Professor of Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundations at Marshall University.
