IMG_1853 IMG_1854 IMG_1855I took the kids to Charleston this afternoon to join with fellow West Virginians to encourage Senator Capito to vote no on DeVos as Education Secretary. A reporter from @13News WOWK 13 News interviewed me as a teacher educator and parent. It was freezing and I was focused on getting the kids back to the car so I really hope I made sense.

I was quoted saying, “We don’t think the education system is perfect but we know that we need to focus on teachers and build up our public education system not tear it down.” Although I recognize that our public education system isn’t perfect and needs improvement, we still need to invest in public education instead of trying to dismantle it. I shared my concern that someone who has already showed gross negligence in her understanding of education should not be the head of education in the nation. I also shared that I spend every day working with future teachers helping them become the best future teachers for my kids and all of the kids of West Virginia. What I didn’t say and wish I had (I was totally not expecting to be interviewed) was that opposing Betsy DeVos is not a partisan issue for me! I wish more of our Republican Senators across the country (including Senator Capito here in WV) would realize this.  Mrs. DeVos showed gross negligence in her preparation for her Senate confirmation hearing. Her abysmal performance demonstrated an amazingly limited understanding of the job that she has been nominated for. Based on that interview (her confirmation hearing) I wouldn’t hire her for any job related to education, even at a local level. #VoteNoCapito #VoteNoOnDeVos

My comments are at the 35 second mark of this video from the local news tonight. The kids will be excited in the morning when they see that they were on the news tonight! #VoteNoCapito
